Hey, have you heard?
Bookstore Romance Day is a day designed to give independent bookstores an opportunity to celebrate Romance fiction — its books, readers, and writers — and to strengthen the relationships between bookstores and the Romance community.
WORD in particular loves a good romance. So much that last year, we marked Bookstore Romance Day with a collaborative love story Flock Together with each staffer contributing to a narrative beat of a traditional romance. We had so much fun that this year, we're bringing you more staff-written romances.
We collected typical romance tropes (plot devices that commonly occur in romance novels) and randomly assigned each staffer a trope to use for their romance. They received two weeks and were given a 1000-word limit to write their swoony best.
Did they succeed? Check them out yourself!
TROPE: Forced Proximity
"Two characters find themselves stuck together in a confined space."
By Poppy Pines (aka Alyson I.)
TROPE: Fake Dating
"The central couple begins a fake relationship and ends up falling in love for real."
By Amanda Toronto (aka Amanda T.)
TROPE: Bodyguard Romance
"Two individuals who are absolutely not supposed to get involved (because one’s safety is on the line) end up falling for one another. Has elements of Forbidden Romance."
By Lance Avarice (aka Davi M.)
TROPE: Dating On a Dare
"Two individuals, who might not otherwise date, end up entangled romantically, when one of them loses a bet to the other."
By Holly Day (aka Holly D.)
TROPE: Forbidden Romance
"A romantic relationship between two individuals that is highly discouraged, often by a third party"
By Kyle Lawrence (aka Jasper A.)
TROPE: Marriage of Convenience
"Two individuals decide to marry, often out of financial or some sort of strategic necessity."
By Evelyn Early (aka Mindy C.)
TROPE: Big City, Small Town
"This trope centers around a character who, for whatever reason, relocates from a big city to a small town. Hijinks and romance ensue."
By Hercules Thrust (aka Steven W.)
