About Born to Read

The Born to Read Book Club was dreamt up by WORD Bookstores and NYT Bestselling author, George O'Connor. We love middle grade books- and more than just any middle grade books, we LOVE adventure tales! Bring on the dragons, the time-travel, the magical, the mythological and the mysterious- as long as it's action-packed and takes us on a journey, we are here for it. Every month, George O'Connor and WORD's very own Nicole Swift pick a brand new adventure novel that just got released into the wild- and they wrangle it in for a high-octane read.

But we haven't even gotten to the best part.... each month, we all come together for a virtual meetup- we catch up with what's going on, welcome new readers, then we get to the book! For the first half of our meetup, we run through the book, the characters, favorite scenes, and even a few hypotheticals- and sometimes George draws his favorite character from the book and what he thinks they look like! Then..... THE AUTHOR JOINS US! That's right, each month, we get to speak to the author of the book and ask them any questions we have, maybe share our ideas for a sequel and tell them what we loved about it.

It's our favorite thing to do all month and we can't wait to read our next story and meet our next fellow-adventurer. We hope you'll join us!

ABOUT THE BOOK CLUB HOSTS:

George O'Connor is an author, illustrator and cartoonist. Above all, George is a Greek mythology buff and a classic superhero comics fan, and he's out to remind us how much our pantheon of superheroes (Superman, Batman, the X-Men, etc) owes to mankind's original superheroes: the Greek pantheon. Now he has brought his attention to OLYMPIANS, an ongoing series retelling the classic Greek myths in comics form. In his New York Times bestselling Olympians series, O'Connor draws from primary documents to reconstruct and retell classic Greek myths. But these stories aren't sedate, scholarly works. They're action-packed, fast-paced, high-drama adventures, with monsters, romance, and not a few huge explosions. O'Connor's vibrant, kinetic art brings ancient tales to undeniable life, in a perfect fusion of super-hero aesthetics and ancient Greek mythology. In addition to his graphic novel career, O'Connor has published several children's picture books, including the New York Times best-selling Kapow!, Sally and the Some-Thing, If I Had a Raptor and If I Had a Triceratops. George lives in Brooklyn, NY with four terrible cats and one good one.

Nicole Swift is not an author, or an illustrator, or a cartoonist but she does love kids books and greek mythology. Nicole is WORD Bookstore's Kids and YA Event Manager and has served as an Event Manager for kids and graphic novels at the Miami Book Fair for almost a decade. Both jobs are action-packed daily adventures. She comes from Miami, Florida and currently resides in Brooklyn where there is not nearly as much sun or palm trees, but she has a lot of books and a lot of cats.
